Interior design, as Italian interior designer Sebastiano Raneri recently put it, is “to shape the space that in turn shapes human experiences”.  The interior design of the Boarding House Oberdeck Studio apartment in Hamburg-Ottensen shows how these experiences can be characterized by well-being, excitement and security, and how they “work”.

51 micro-apartments for temporary accommodation were built directly at Altona railway station in a Wilhelminian former railway building, which has changed uses many times. The interior concept is fascinating. It creates a new relationship between people and their spatial and object-related environments.

The entrance is covered in bright white, marble and smooth walls, which complement each other to create a spacious threshold lit by a network of lighting points. Visitors arrive here and are guided to the next level via an inviting stair sculpture. The linear proportions create a calming atmosphere of clarity and overview.

On the next level, visitors find themselves in gray-blue corridor areas and, similar to being at sea, in mist and calm water, the wall color and floor covering enter into a light, melancholic and elegant dialog. Details such as the base profiles and door frames flow into each other.

The interior design of the rooms is reminiscent of the work of a sculptor. The core is formed by a structure of colored, nested bodies, sensitively and harmoniously proportioned, richly detailed with the use of opal, opaque and transparent materials. Usage levels are interlinked and can thus be used simultaneously. In contrast to this, there are places for relaxation in reed green and water blue upholstered furniture.

The crowning glory of this memorable, continuous spatial drama can be found on the roof terrace with a far-reaching view over the city of Hamburg and all the way to the port.
