The new build was constructed on one of the last remaining undeveloped sites in the center of Kaiserslautern. The goal was to create a building that takes into account the individual requirements of modern living and working life. The design was intended to fit in with the surroundings on the one hand, but also to set itself apart as an accent in equal measure. The ground floor zone is used for commercial purposes and the apartments are located in the middle section. The recessed top floor created a multifaceted reflection of contemporary facade tectonics. The thermally insulated facade plays with its window openings and the niches of the balconies. The rhythm of open and closed, of solid, yet separate, dictates the effect of the facade. And this concept is continued in the color: The coloring was to pick up the interaction between the contrasts and support the sense of effortlessness. In this way, the building became as unmistakable and unique as its location. The designers quickly alighted on the idea of a meander, with the gable surfaces designed to appear supporting and solid. In the interest of effortlessness and to tone down the solidity, a slightly broken white was chosen. The recessed corner balconies formed the cornerstones here. On the long sides, the floor-to-ceiling window openings have been joined together with a window strip. In a lightly colored medium gray, they are cool, elegant and interesting all at the same time. This is what truly brings the “white” meander to life and gives it its effortlessness, making it the unifying element. The building needed warm accents to balance out this cool and severe character, a shiny counterpart to the raw render. The orange red for the offset balcony dividing walls was therefore an easy decision: shiny, reserved, yet stimulating. This exciting color and material selection creates the seemingly natural integration in and submission to the coloring of the surroundings. The accentuation also highlighted the individuality and independence in the desired way. A new, vibrant and colorful piece of architecture was created in the heart of the city.
