Motel One launched in 2000, with the first budget design hotel in Berlin. Today the hotel group has over 60 hotels in eight countries. Entering the market in Switzerland has been a milestone in the company history. In July 2016, the Motel One Basel opened in the old town, in Barfüssergasse. There was an extremely tight time window of just eight weeks to perform all the painting work – a challenge that was tackled in close collaboration with Brillux.
The “One Lounge” is the heart of every Motel One. A spacious, open-plan lounge that works in a multi-functional way, as a lobby, living room, breakfast café and bar. Alongside classics such as the “egg chair”, the Motel One Group has a unique, individual design style. Each hotel has its own story and design that has been elaborated with renowned local and international artists. Inspired by the local art scene, overnighting in the Motel one Basel really does mean being surrounded by art. The turquoise blue brand color is omnipresent, from the egg chair, to turquoise-colored design carpets, to carefully selected small details such as turquoise tea lights and peppermint candies.
The One Lounge, which is flooded with light through floor-to-ceiling windows, was designed in collaboration with successful Swiss graffiti artist Adrian Falkner. Falkner’s art “Soundscape” certainly catches the eye. The abstract circular shapes are reminiscent of speech or thought bubbles, visually representing the soundscape of the “One Lounge” as well as the feelings of the hotel guests from so many different cultures.
The walls in the 143 rooms were coated with Briplast Airless Light Filler 1885 – a ready-to-use light filler material, that enables easy, smooth handling. For fire protection reasons, in the corridors and staircases, CreaGlas Fabric VG 3457 with CreaGlas Fabric Adhesive 377 was used. The top coat was with Superlux 3000. All doors and door frames were first of all primed with Hydro-PU-Spray Filler 2120 and sprayed with Hydro-PU-Spray Silk Matt Enamel 2188 or, where spray application was not viable, rollered with Hydro-PU-Tec Silk Matt Enamel 2088. The white plaster ceilings were coated with living room paint 1820.
