Birth is a natural process – but the surroundings on maternity wards are often sterile and dominated by technology. By redesigning the obstetrics department, St.-Clemens-Hospital wanted to combine the advantages of optimal medical care at the hospital with a cozy and pleasant atmosphere often only found in birth centers. An organic sense of space helps to avoid unnecessary stress during birth and to shorten the birth – that was the requirement for a design that promotes relaxation. The color and furnishing concept goes way beyond the conventional: In the waiting and entrance area, furniture in warm wood shades and different shades of brown for the wall design create a trusting and calming atmosphere. The design alternates between matt, homogeneous and gloss, textured surface. Light color areas direct people to the treatment rooms. Elegant creative techniques in beige shades create a cozy ambiance in the corridors too. The atmosphere in the generous delivery rooms is calming and almost spiritual. Organic stimulation techniques and designs with abstract natural motifs on the ceiling and walls create a feeling of security wherever the expectant mothers look.
